Q: What does Smile Council do? We are all about helping people who have crooked teeth or jaws. Each of our doctors is a fully qualified specialist orthodontist with many years of experience. Our role is to diagnose and treat such cases. We also liaise closely with dentists and other dental specialists in the overall care of our patients.
Q: Orthodontics! what is that?
Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that attends to people who have crooked teeth or jaws. An orthodontist must also do a further 3 years full time training in addition to the 5 years training that a dentist receives.
It involves the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of facial and dental problems. The word ‘orthodontics’ literally translates to 'straight teeth' - but these days orthodontics covers a lot more than that.
Q: My child is now 8 years old, should I bring him or her to see one of the doctors at Smile Council Orthodontics? The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends that around the age of 7 is the right time for a first off evaluation by an orthodontist. Early diagnosis can help prevent more serious problems from arising and can also provide a guide for facial growth.
Q: I am an adult now, can I still straighten my teeth? Many people may have missed out on having treatment as a child, but as adults they can have their teeth straightened - it's not too late!
Q: How long will my treatment take? Each case is unique, so treatment length will vary and may be as much as 18-36 months. We strive to treat each patient as quickly and as expeditiously as possible. To do this, we use the most modern tools and techniques, in line with achieving the best possible long-term outcome for each patient.
Q: How much will it cost? Do you have a payment plan? Costs vary by the length of treatment, and also by the type of treatment used. A written quote is provided and there are many payment options available and these are interest-free.
Q: And will it hurt? These days the wearing of braces is simple and generally quite easy. Braces do require regular adjustment and after this teeth will be slightly tender. This is only for a short period of time. With soft food and mild pain relief medication if necessary, it soon passes.
Q: Do I need a referral to visit Smile Council? No referral is required to see one of the specialists at Smile Council Orthodontics. Just call us at 1300 733 077 to organize an appointment that suits you best.
Q: Can I still play sport or a musical instrument whilst wearing braces?
Definitely. When playing any contact sports, wearing a mouthguard is recommended even if you are not wearing braces. Mouthguard can fit over the braces but may need to be changed as your teeth align.
People get use to the feeling of their braces after the first couple of weeks. It does not stop them from doing the things they love, including musical instruments.
Q: Do I still need to see my family dentist? Yes. Regular visit with your dentist is important to help you achieve healthy teeth and gums while we improve your smile. A healthy mouth leads to a better and happier smile and that’s priceless.
Q: Are there foods I need to avoid when having braces? There are certain foods that are not good for your teeth even if you are not wearing braces. We will go through with you what to avoid and how to look after your teeth on the day your braces are placed on.
Q: Having a Good Dental Health Having good healthy teeth and gums are important. It makes it easier to chew our food, avoid bad breath and bleeding sore gums. We always recommend regular dental visits, often six monthly, with your general dentist even when you are having braces.
