What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that attends to people who have crooked teeth or jaws. To prepare them for this, orthodontists must do another 3 years full time training in addition to the 5 years training that a dentist receives.

It involves the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of facial and dental problems. The word orthodontics literally translates to 'straight teeth' - but these days orthodontics covers a lot more than that.

So why straighten teeth?
Straight teeth are much nicer to smile with, wouldn't you agree? They are also easier to clean, function better, are less prone to damage and accidents, and are healthier in the long run.
When should you see an orthodontist?
For children: The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends that about the age of 7 is the right time for a first off evaluation by an orthodontist. Early diagnosis can help prevent more serious problems from arising and can also provide a guide for facial growth.

For adults: Many people may have missed out on having treatment as a child, but as adults they can have their teeth straightened - it's not too late!

The big questions!!
How long with it take?
Every treatment is different, but as a rough guide treatment will take between 18 to 36 months.

How much will it cost?
Costs vary by the length of treatment, and also by the type of treatment used. A written quote is provided and there are many payment options available.

And will it hurt?
These days with modern braces the wearing of braces is simple and generally quite easy. Braces do require regular adjustment and after this teeth will be a little tender. This is for a short period of time and with some soft foods and a mild pain reliever, if necessary, it soon passes.
